A letter released in October by Focus on the Family Action titled “Letter from 2012 in Obama’s America” was printed in the current (January 2009) issue of Harper’s Magazine. There is much in the letter with which every sensible and good person should be angered, but I’ll focus on one little excerpt. Why is it, I wonder, that Christians can be so cruel, easily persuaded by propaganda and motivated by fear? I digress.
The Boy Scouts chose to disband rather than be forced to obey a Supreme Court decision that they would have to hire homosexual Scoutmasters and allow them to sleep in tents with young boys.
I loathe the Boy Scouts of America. The organization is a bastion of intolerance and bigotry. If I had earned my Eagle Scout I’d have returned it long ago. It would bring me great pleasure to see them disband. Again, I digress.
Do Christians suppose homosexuals are more likely to engage in acts of pedophilia than heterosexuals? Perhaps, the thinking goes, if one is sexually deviant there are, for that person, no moral boundaries. The logic is absurd! It’s almost as stupid as suggesting gay and lesbian couples are less fit to be parents than heterosexual parents.
Do mentally and sexually healthy heterosexual men degrade to abusive illegal misconduct when alone with young girls? No, they do not. Why, then, would homosexual men do so in the presence of young boys?
Homophobia needs to stop! It’s 2008, not 1928. We should have moved past this by now.
