170 Miles Per Hour!

Dad and Me after the drive to 170mph

My dad wouldn’t let me drive his Corvette so I asked him if he’d at least take me for a ride. What I got was far more than I expected. After leaving his neighborhood we accelerated to 120 miles per hour in traffic down the Space Coast Parkway. We missed the turn to Nova Road and had to turn around.

He had told me the fastest he’d been in this new ‘Vette was 130 miles per hour. I didn’t expect anything faster than that for my ride.

Before owning Lexuses in the 1990s and then a Volkswagon Beetle and Chevy SSR my dad owned several Corvettes. I fondly remember fast drives to the beach down Nova Road as a teenager. Nova Road is straight, well-maintained, and free of ditch vegetation from which animals or police offers can suddenly appear.

Dad and I drove down Nova Road until we had passed all the neighborhoods and their cookie-cutter houses. We talked about the car and it’s many features: keyless push-button start/stop, paddle-shift six-speed automatic transmission, LS3 engine that produces 430Hp and 424 lb.-ft. of torque, and $2,300 tyres! When we had passed most of the traffic and had nothing but straight open road in front of us he mashed the accelerator.

I was pinned to the back of my seat! The speedometer needle quickly jumped past 100 mph and didn’t slow until 170mph when Dad let off the accelerator and applied the brake. The ‘Vette shifted smoothly and pulled all the way to our top speed of 170 miles per hour! It was an enormous adrenaline-inducing, heart-pumping, breath-stealing experience that I will never forget.

Thanks, Dad!

  1. Yeah, hurricane winds maybe. :)
You’ve got the same engine as me. I’ve done 100 and that was pushing it. ;-)
