Chevrolet Keyfob Repair

A couple days ago my Chevy Malibu Maxx keyfob stopped working. It was intermittent for a few days prior, so I wasn’t surprised. When I opened it up the problem was quickly apparent: the small metal piece that secures the battery and is its contacts had come loose.

This morning I got my soldering kit out and made the simple repair. Only two of the three tiny points were loose. I had to use a hemostat to hold the piece firmly to the board while I performed my handy-work. Voila! It works. In fact, it’s probably better than new.

It was fun to solder again. The last time I plied my soldering skills was probably nine years ago on old Learjet wiring back in Wichita, Kansas.

  1. Thanks so much for the great repair information. I have two fobs that have the exact same problem and a friend who can solder :)

  2. I just picked up a Malibu Maxx today and must say it is a nice ride! But, the key fob wasn’t working when I got it so I took it apart and found this problem inside that you are explaining how to fix in your thread! Thought I would google the problem and here I am! Thankx for the fix tip!

  3. I have an 08 Malibu same problem bought a new fob and six months later same problem. Have soldered them both several times but after a few months they break loose again. Something is wrong with the design. too much tension or something.

    1. Thanks for the comment, Blake. I would think that the design is flawed, or at least the manufacturing, but that a re-solder would be a permanent fix. I haven’t had any problems since the original fix.

  4. Thanks for the information…I was thinking this would work, but googled to see if it would! Can’t wait to get mine fixed now that winter is looming…and I am realizing how I’d like my remote start back! Both of our fobs have the same issue.

  5. Had the same problem on my Maxx. Fixed it a couple times a couple years ago. Lately, the unlock and remote buttons won’t work though.. Very odd…

  6. I wish I would have seen this thread before I took the car into the dealership for diagnostic check. Turns out I had this issue with both fobs. Dealer told me one fob was inoperative and other needed new battery. I declined to buy a replacement. I returned home and opened up both fobs to discover the battery clips on both we’re loose. Soldered clips back on both pcbs and both work flawlessly.
