Spring has sprung. As if surrendering to the inevitable, Sunday River celebrated its annual Parrot Head Festival April 2nd. Alex and Adam and I were there (we would have been there regardless). Jen and her friend Brian showed up late and took a few runs with us before retiring to the festivities. It was nice to ride with her again.
The day started off very nicely. We took a few turns down my new favorite run: Ecstasy to Lower Upper Cut and then to the best trail, Southpaw, which dumps into the end of Agony. It’s a brilliant run that is steep and narrow and curvy and banked and vary fast. We conquered Agony and, after a short jaunt on the flattest green on the mountain, tackled the Celestial glade. This time I was more careful and successfully avoided all trees. Celestial was by far my favorite trail of the day. The powder was deep and tracks few.
By the afternoon the temperatures had climbed well above freezing and the snow had become very wet and thick and sticky. So sticky was the snow that it would grab my board and intermittently slow me down to the point that at one point I had to completely remove my snowboard and walk to the chair lift. While the morning was good, the afternoon was terrible.
The best part of the day, of course, was spending time with my amazing friends doing what I love.
