Maine Photography Meetup: Scarborough Beach and Cliffs
4 Comments | Posted by Brent Danley in friend, maine, photography
Today was another Maine Photography Meetup (or at Facebook). Like the last one I attended, the conditions were ideal: the temperatures climbed into the 60 °F range. Remember, it’s November in Maine!
As is usual, the girls and I got to spend time with old friends and make some new ones. We hiked down Scarborough Beach and then along the cliffs of Prout’s Neck Bird Sanctuary. And back.
After our long hike we enjoyed brunch at The Good Table in Cape Elizabeth. It was incredible. My $6 mug of hot apple cider with rum was worth every penny! Hayley’s $2.25 bottle of “real” maple syrup…not so much.
This morning the Maine Photography Meetup Group met at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland. The weather couldn’t have been better: clear sunny skies, falling colorful leaves and lots of dew. It was great to see old friends and meet new people.

Pagans and Babysitters

Last weekend our family had the good fortune of attending the L.L. Bean Summer Concert Series in Freeport, Maine with Jason and Peg Pooler and their kids. It’s an outdoor venue. The weather was perfect: cool with clear, starry skies.
The featured performer, Dar Williams, put on a great concert. I wasn’t familiar with Dar before the show. Now I’m a big fan.
Dar’s voice is angelic and earthy and her song’s lyrics are cerebral, poetic, poignant, funny and moving. I clapped and cheered throughout the concert.
After the concert Kirsten and I stood outside and talked to Peg and Jason for a long time while the kidlets ran around and played. Most of the concertgoers had left so we were mostly alone. At around 22:30 Dar came out of L.L. Bean and approached us, just to talk. After hanging out with us for a bit she gave us two CDs. How cool is that?!
This song is called The Babysitter’s Here and is from her album, The Honesty Room. It’s a humorous song about a young girl’s experience with her babysitter, whom she admires greatly.

I REALLY want to get back up in the air. It would be so cool to duck under Portland’s Class C airspace and fly along the beach or snap photos of distant island lighthouses. It would be fun to zip over to Sanford Regional in New Hampshire for some touch-and-gos. A flight north along the coast would be idyllic.
Soon.

It was announced today at Monument Square in Portland that the Maine Red Claws NBA Development League basketball team will be affiliated with the mighty Boston Celtics! Woo hoo!
I’m excited to attend the games and cheer on the Red Claws.
A couple days ago I saw a tweet advertising 2 for 1 breakfast at Sea Dog Brewing Company in South Portland.
Mon, June 1 through Wed, June 3 only: 2 for 1 breakfast at Sea Dog South Portland — http://tinyurl.com/nl5xap 4:46 PM May 28th from web
Breakfast is my favorite meal to eat out, mostly because it’s an excellent way to get a day off to a great start. Kirsten and I are always looking for exceptional breakfast restaurants. Our old favorite, Eggspectations, recently closed. We used to take the girls there for Festibond. Sea Dog Brewing Company is now in their old location!! How cool is that?
The current issue of Down East Magazine arrived in my mailbox today. The cover, as you can see, is incredible!

Governor Signs LD 1020, An Act to End Discrimination in Civil Marriage and Affirm Religious Freedom
Governor’s Office, Maine.gov, May 6, 2009
Today Governor John E. Baldacci signed into law LD 1020, An Act to End Discrimination in Civil Marriage and Affirm Religious Freedom.
Just when I was beginning to think I couldn’t be any prouder to be a Mainer, this. Hooray for Maine!
In the past, I opposed gay marriage while supporting the idea of civil unions,†Governor Baldacci said. “I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law, and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage.
~Governor Baldacci
Bravo, Governor. Bravo!
Marriage is the legally recognized union of 2 people. Gender-specific terms relating to the marital relationship or familial relationships, including, but not limited to, “spouse,” “family,” “marriage,” “immediate family,” “dependent,” “next of kin,” “bride,” “groom,” “husband,” “wife,” “widow” and “widower,” must be construed to be gender-neutral for all purposes throughout the law, whether in the context of statute, administrative or court rule, policy, common law or any other source of civil law.
~SP0384, LD 1020, § 650-A. Codification of marriage
Thank you for sending this to me, Chuck!
Kirsten and I enjoyed each other and the gorgeousness of Maine on Tuesday. I received a tweet last week about Mackworth Island and planned to take Kirsten after her class. Kirsten wanted to go to the beach. So we did both.
The temperature reached an unseasonably warm 96.5 °F, which is a bit warmer than my preference.
The hike around Mackworth Island was very nice. The tourists aren’t here yet so there were only a few people and plenty of available parking. Neither of us had ever hiked the 1.25 mile perimeter trail around the island. The vistas are beautiful, of course. The center of the island is the Baxter School for the Deaf, so Kirsten said we could make as much noise as we wanted. On the east side there is a fairy village in the woods. The girls will LOVE that when we go back. Kirsten and I held hands as we walked and spent a long time relaxing on a swinging bench on the south side overlooking Portland.
