Maine Photography Meetup: Scarborough Beach and Cliffs
4 Comments | Posted by Brent Danley in friend, maine, photography
Today was another Maine Photography Meetup (or at Facebook). Like the last one I attended, the conditions were ideal: the temperatures climbed into the 60 °F range. Remember, it’s November in Maine!
As is usual, the girls and I got to spend time with old friends and make some new ones. We hiked down Scarborough Beach and then along the cliffs of Prout’s Neck Bird Sanctuary. And back.
After our long hike we enjoyed brunch at The Good Table in Cape Elizabeth. It was incredible. My $6 mug of hot apple cider with rum was worth every penny! Hayley’s $2.25 bottle of “real” maple syrup…not so much.
This morning the Maine Photography Meetup Group met at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland. The weather couldn’t have been better: clear sunny skies, falling colorful leaves and lots of dew. It was great to see old friends and meet new people.
This past week I spend two days photographing parishioners at Zion Church Ministries in Everett, Massachusetts. They are a fun, lively and beautiful bunch of people.
This woman, Deaconess Lolithea Thompson, wears 14 karat gold fingernails. She had them custom designed and crafted by a jeweler. Each nail is emblazoned with a trinket or patterned texture. One of the thumbnails has a stud through the tip, around which a small gold flower twirls. How cool is that?!
When Lolithea’s natural nails grow out she has to remove the gold nails, trim her natural nails, and re-affix the gold nails. She has had these nails for decades and is quite proud of them.
Today I went on a cruise in Casco Bay to Long Island with the girls and a few friends I met on Flickr. It was a great time! I can’t wait to do it again in the summer.
A Cruise To Long Island

Jason Gendron and I went to Cape Cod, Massachusetts yesterday to photograph lighthouses. It was an awesome day!
I met Jason at five o’clock for breakfast at Station House Grill in Hollis, Maine, where he works weekend mornings. He cooked our breakfast, which was delicious.
After breakfast we drove to East Boston Piers Park where we photographed the early morning Boston skyline. The temperatures were frigid and wind brisk. We wasted no time getting our shots so we could return to the warm car. Next we drove to the north side of the Charles River to photograph the city. Unfortunately the sun was too high and directly in front of us. Not wanting to miss any daylight photography opportunities we immediately headed south to Cape Cod.

It’s up.
Today I put up a temporary page at BrentDanleyPhotography.com. I registered the domain some time ago and used it as a sandbox for learning Lightbox. I’ve been feeling a ton of pressure to keep up with web development technologies. I need to be able to perform well should I be offered my dream job. I’ve been reading up on XHTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript, MySQL and, especially, how they all come together to create asynchronous dynamic pages.
Lightbox, it turns out, is as simple as adding a single rel attribute to an anchor tag. First you must embed the Prototype JavaScript Framework and the Script.aculo.us and Lightbox libraries.
<script type="text/javascript" src="js/prototype.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="js/scriptaculous.js?load=effects,builder"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="js/lightbox.js"></script>
Then you simply add the rel attribute with value lightbox to any anchor tag that points to a picture. Voila!
Click <a href="http://url/to/image.jpg" rel="lightbox">here</a>.
The pictures for BDP are served by Flickr and retrieved via the API with the help of phpFlickr. I used Flickr’s machine tag feature to allow me to more precisely search the photos for inclusion in each category of BDP.
Cheers. Let me know what you think.
I worked eleven days in November. I’m going to work four days in December. Things are tight, to say the least. I have a lot to be happy about, no doubt, but I think the stress is literally eating me from the inside. I feel like I’m going to implode.
When my boss called last night to tell me my only shoot of the week canceled I decided I’d go on my own shoot. Photography has always been my way to get away from it all and maintain at least a semblance of sanity. I especially enjoy shooting Maine’s lighthouses. Blogging also helps.
I left at around six o’clock this morning to catch the sunrise. Kirsten sent me with a full thermos of hot coffee. I love that woman! The sky was overcast but it didn’t matter; PHL is wonderful regardless of the weather conditions. I took some pictures with my 50mm f/1.8 lens on manual focus for a while before deciding to head home.
A few days ago I got a Flickrmail from the proprietor of a gift shop in one of our local malls. They were inquiring about purchasing several of my pictures.
Today I got a check in the mail for Downtown Wichita and Keeper of the Plains. Very cool. They’re going to put them on mugs and magnets.
